The ability of our brain to reorganize and adapt throughout our lives is called brain neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is critical for our ability to learn, recover from injuries, and maintain cognitive and emotional health. One of the essential players in this process is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Scientists have long known its role in memory and in the growth of new brain cells, and building new neuronal junctions called synapses which are necessary for brain cell communication and the performance of mental tasks. BDNF is also involved in the dissolution of neural connections that are no longer useful and in regulating mood and emotions as deficiency of this nerve growth factor is a common denominator among many neuropsychiatric problems.
